World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

12 Jun 2020

June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), a United Nations designated day to collectively voice our opposition to the abuse of older people, which can commonly occur by their families, partners or someone in their community.

The Ageing and Disability Commissioner, together with A/Minister Lee, the NSW Police and a representative from the Blacktown City Elder Abuse Prevention Collaborative came together to share their thoughts about what might cause abuse of older people, what are the signs to look out for, and importantly the valuable contributions older people make to our community.

How can you support World Elder Abuse Awareness Day?

One of the most important steps in protecting older people from abuse is having a greater awareness about the signs of abuse, and knowing what to do to take action. You can use our communications toolkit (PDF, 3.3 MB) to bring attention to World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, share our video with your community and download our flyers that promote the rights of older people and adults with disability.

We acknowledge Aboriginal people as the First Nations Peoples of NSW and pay our respects to Elders past, present, and future.

Informed by lessons of the past, the Ageing and Disability Commission is improving how we work with Aboriginal people and communities. We listen and learn from the knowledge, strength and resilience of Stolen Generations Survivors, Aboriginal Elders and Aboriginal communities.
