This Knowledge Hub is a central repository of contemporary research, policy, data, reports and tools relating to abuse, neglect and exploitation of older people and people with disability.

The below Topics in Focus categorises content and consolidates an evidence-based understanding of the factors that drive abuse, and protective factors that can minimise and increase safeguards against abuse, neglect and exploitation.

This Knowledge Hub is hosted and curated by the Analysis & Policy Observatory (APO), an open access evidence platform making public policy research and resources accessible and useable.

Awareness and education

This includes resources about initiatives that raise community awareness about abuse, neglect and exploitation of older people and adults with disability.

Prevention and early intervention

This includes resources that considers areas such as models of care, community participation, and good practice guidelines. 

Responses to abuse, neglect and exploitation

This includes policies, guidelines, resources and actions to respond to abuse, including supporting victims and working with authorities, experts in the field and families.

Supporting adults with disability

This examines the evidence, barriers and enablers where critical changes are needed in designing a system that is fully integrated for adults with disability, including supporting rights to have control over their own life and to live free from abuse, neglect and exploitation. It also includes research about supported accommodation services and assisted boarding houses in NSW.

Supporting older people

This examines abuse of older people and provides resources that promote reforms designed to improve their lifestyle, care and outcomes le. It also includes the role of adequate support for older people that promotes their rights to independence, dignity and respect, as well as the right to fair access to services and community resources.

Supporting children and young people in residential care

This covers literature on how to improve life in residential care for children and young people from the ages of 12 to 18 who are unable to live with family, kinship carers or foster carers. The content considers the experiences of young people in all out-of-home care settings, Official Community Visitor programs, leaving care and the transition to independence.

Systemic issues

This examines a range of systemic issues involved in the protection and promotion of the rights of older people and adults with disability, including changes in priority areas of the workforce, human rights, access and choice for older people and adults with disability.
